City of Madison Heights Awarded Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act Grant, Tree Inventory Launching October 2025

Madison Heights, MI — The City of Madison Heights is proud to announce it has been awarded an Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act Grant, made possible through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service and in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

This competitive grant program supports communities in expanding and maintaining healthy urban forests, with a focus on sustainability, climate resilience, and equitable access to green spaces. Madison Heights was one of several communities selected for funding.

The grant will fund a comprehensive tree inventory, set to begin October 20, 2025. This inventory will identify, map, and assess all public trees within the city, providing essential data to guide future planting, maintenance, and preservation efforts.

“Trees are vital to our city’s quality of life,” said City Manager Melissa Marsh. “They provide shade, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and create welcoming spaces for residents. This grant allows us to take an important step toward protecting and enhancing our urban forest for generations to come.”

Residents may notice certified arborists working throughout neighborhoods in the coming months to record tree locations, measure sizes, and assess overall health.
